The Nuclear Question

☢️

Enrichment Beyond Civilian Use

Iran enriched uranium to 60% purity — weapons-grade is 90%. Far beyond the 3.67% allowed for power plants.

🤝

JCPOA Froze the Program (2015)

Iran agreed to limit enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. It worked — until it didn't.

💥

Trump Withdrew (2018)

Pulled out of the deal, imposed "maximum pressure" sanctions. Iran responded by restarting enrichment.

⚠️ Iran Threatens Europe

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any military involvement in the war by European nations would be considered "an act of war" — a direct response to European mobilisation in Cyprus and involvement in the broader war effort.

⚠️ Key Shift — Day 4

By 3 March 2026, the conflict had expanded far beyond Iran: Israel invaded Lebanon, Iran threatened Europe, AWS data centres were hit, and Iran's navy was largely destroyed. The war now spans at least eight countries with no ceasefire in sight.

🇦🇪 Why It Matters for the UAE

The UAE is not a belligerent in this conflict — but Iranian retaliation struck civilian areas across the country.

🏨

Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina hit — Iranian strikes set the Fairmont The Palm hotel on fire and damaged the Burj Al Arab. 4 people injured in the Palm Jumeirah area.

✈️

Zayed International Airport struck — 1 person killed and 7 injured in strikes on Abu Dhabi's main airport.

💔

1 civilian killed in Abu Dhabi — falling debris from an intercepted missile killed a civilian of Asian nationality.

🛡️

UAE intercepted multiple waves — Air defenses successfully engaged several Iranian missile waves, with fragments falling in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. On 3 March, ballistic missiles were detected at 3:30 AM.

🛢️

Fujairah Oil Zone hit — On 3 March, an Iranian drone struck the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, causing debris to fall and starting a fire.

☁️

AWS data centres damaged — Amazon Web Services facilities in the UAE suffered significant damage from Iranian strikes on 3 March.

🎯

Al Dhafra Air Base targeted — Iran targeted the US base in the UAE alongside other Gulf-based US installations.

📢

UAE condemned Iran's attack — stated it will "take all necessary measures" to defend itself.

⛽ The Strait of Hormuz — Closed

The IRGC closed the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow waterway through which roughly 20% of the world's oil supply passes daily. This is one of Iran's most significant escalation levers.

A closure disrupts global energy markets, drives oil prices up, and directly impacts economies worldwide. This had long been considered Iran's "nuclear option" in economic terms.

Civilian Toll — The Minab School Airstrike

An airstrike hit a girls' elementary school in Minab, Iran. The incident drew widespread international condemnation. According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, at least 110 of the 201 confirmed killed were civilians.

The human rights group HRANA separately reported 133 killed and at least 200 injured. Casualty figures remained contested between Iranian government, Iranian civil society, and Western sources.

World Reactions

🇺🇳

United Nations

Condemned the initial strikes for undermining Middle East stability.

🇪🇺

European Union

Describes the situation as "perilous" — urges de-escalation.

🇬🇧

United Kingdom

RAF assisted defensively. Prioritizing UK nationals' safety in the region.

🇫🇷

France

Calls for urgent UN Security Council meeting.

🇷🇺

Russia

Condemns US-Israel strikes as "reckless and destabilizing."

🇸🇦

Saudi Arabia

Condemned Iran's retaliatory strikes. Stated it will "take all necessary measures" including responding to aggression.

Critics of the operation called it illegal under both domestic and international law. The Washington Post reported Trump's decision came after repeated lobbying by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Israeli government. The strikes were launched despite a diplomatic breakthrough announced just one day earlier.

Key Takeaways

1

70+ years of history

This conflict started with a CIA coup in 1953 and has been building ever since — through revolution, hostages, proxies, and failed diplomacy.

2

Khamenei's assassination changed everything

The killing of Iran's Supreme Leader — along with multiple top military and intelligence officials — plunged Iran into a leadership crisis with no clear succession path.

3

Diplomacy was abandoned at the last minute

Oman announced a breakthrough on 27 February — Iran agreed to enrichment limits and IAEA verification. The strikes came the next day anyway.

4

Nuclear program is the justification, regime change is the goal

Trump explicitly called on Iranians to "take over your government." The stated aim went beyond nuclear prevention to toppling the Islamic Republic.

5

Gulf states took direct hits

UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan all sustained Iranian retaliatory strikes. Civilians were killed in the UAE and Syria. Airports were hit in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Erbil.

6

Strait of Hormuz closure threatens the global economy

Iran's closure of the strait — through which 20% of the world's oil flows — has immediate implications for energy prices and global trade.

7

The conflict is ongoing

As of 3 March 2026, the conflict entered its fourth day with no ceasefire in sight. Israel invaded Lebanon, Iran's navy was largely destroyed, Iran threatened European nations with retaliation, and AWS data centres in the Gulf were damaged. Tehran rejected all diplomatic channels. The region remains in an active, expanding state of war spanning at least eight countries.
